Last weekend we went to Noboribetsu Onsen resort. Onsens are public baths where you soak in volcanic water. They have eleven different types of water in Noboribetsu and it's suppose to be some of the finest onsens in Japan. We stayed in a hostel a town away. I was completely freaked out by this place. It took forever to find. The tour book said turn right at the Lawsons (convience store) at the end of a steep hill look to the left for the sign and the drive way is 300 yards from the sign.
The steep hill is actually a mountain. The sign was on the ground hidden in the grass. The hostel is on top of a mountain! It was old and everything looked like it was from the 70's. It seemed like a converted school. There was no one there when we arrived and it just weirded me out.
We went to two different onsens. Both were nice and felt so wonderful. The second one was in a fancy hotel and had 10 different baths and one was outside. So you can soak in the hot water and enjoy the cool air and scenery.
The onsens are segregated and you bath first. You scrub every part of your body really well. This hotel had all these nice bath products. Then you just go and soak. They have places for you to relax out of the water. It's really better to go with a friend but it's fine by yourself too.
This area is called Hell Valley because of all the volcanos and geysers. So they have a devil theme going on.
This is a volcanic lake. There was so much mist and smoke from the water we couldn't really see much.
This is a swan sitting on a toilet. Not sure what is going there.
That's 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
